Our Story

Living simply and sustainably

Kia ora. We are Jill and Martin; kaitiakitanga (guardians) of Hares Hut, a small farm in The Taylor Pass, Marlborough, Aotearoa New Zealand.

Native forest regeneration is our primary goal, and over the eleven years we have been here, we have seen growth in the natural environment, a decrease in exotic predators and a satisfying increase in bird life.

We enjoy hosting guests in the cottage at Hares Hut, and our guiding principle is Manaakitanga - the Māori world view of the process of showing respect, generosity and care for others.

Cottage History

In 2015, three shepherds huts were built in Otago and transported to the bare land that is Hares Hut.

The huts were joined together and the cottage was created.

We are joined at Hares Hut by our farm and domestic animals.
